Does activated charcoal really help the skin?

Activated carbon has a porous structure and a negative electrical charge, attracting charged molecules such as toxins and gases. Ordinary charcoal consists of peat, coal, wood, coconut shells and petroleum, but activated charcoal is produced by heating it to a higher temperature in the presence of gases. The higher temperature changes the internal structure of charcoal, shrinks its pores and enlarges its surface resulting in a form of charcoal that is more porous than usual.

Acne is caused by the build-up of dead skin cells and oil that clogs the pores of the skin, leading to breakouts. Activated carbon helps to remove bacteria and other impurities from the pores of the skin and ensures exfoliation. It traps chemicals, prevents their absorption and helps remove microparticles like dirt, dust, chemicals, toxins and bacteria from the skin surface, making it easier to remove them. Your body cannot absorb activated carbon, so it carries toxins that adhere to the surface of your body. Charcoal is relatively sluggish, so you can manage and treat your acne without the risk of allergic reactions or irritable skin.

Activated charcoal can be used in face masks to bind, extract, clean and make the oil and dirt in the pores look smaller. Clear pores help remove impurities such as blackheads and blemishes and give you firmer and radiant skin. Activated carbon helps to remove dead skin cells and absorb excess oil from the skin, leaving the skin smooth and supple. With anti-inflammatory properties, activated carbon can help reduce swelling and relieve pain caused by wounds. It also produces antibacterial effects and absorbs harmful microbes from wounds.

Applied in the form of a paste, activated charcoal can remove the sting from a bite wound and trigger an infection before it deepens. This benefit extends to deeper and cleaner wounds, promotes the growth of new skin cells and reduces scars. Activated carbon offers a range of benefits to your skin and you can use it as face mask, over-the-counter supplement or as a form of capsule, cream or paste. Before you start using activated carbon products, you should consult a dermatologist or approved physician.
