Activated carbon has a porous structure and a negative electrical charge, attracting charged molecules such as toxins and gases. Ordinary charcoal consists of peat, coal, wood, coconut shells and petroleum, but activated charcoal is produced by heating it to a higher temperature in the presence of gases.
